Who Are We

About Us

Background

An organization established to promote entrepreneurial development of previously disadvantaged women. The Women in Water Infrastructure and Construction – SA (TWWIC-SA) was founded in 2017 to empower women to gain access to contracts, training programmes, finance and network in the Built Environment.

The Built Environment role players, stakeholders and Associations were gathered for a National workshop at the University of Pretoria on the 11th June 1997 where the mandate was given to initiatives like TWWIC-SA to go ahead with the main objective of empowering women in the Built Environment  TWWIC-SA leadership were part of that history where this decision was made.

The Birth of TWWIC-SA

OUR STORY

The organisation was then born on the 6th August 2017 as a result of deliberations from the monthly gentlemen and sisterhood that took
place during the Women’s month in Sandton, Johannesburg. A mandate was issued to Ms Thembi Mbele to establish an organisation that will bring a real transformation of women in the built environment.

  • TWWIC-SA is not a stagnant entity but grows and is responsive to the changing environment where it operates.
  •  The idea emanates from sufficient evidence provided by history that alongside men folk, women have built homes for many years and for a variety of reasons.
  • These traditional partnerships between men and women in building homes were not transplanted into commercialisation and modern industry, thereby leaving women behind.
  • New approaches will be needed to deal with some stereotypes of the past – there is no more room for stereotypic behaviours
  • The South African Constitution and the Equity Act requires that women be employed in all sectors of the economy.
  • The Honourable President of South Africa, Mr Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa has reflected on the importance of incorporating women in all sectors of the economy in his State of the National address of 2021.

A force to be reckoned with....
